DownScan is a very-high-frequency mode, roughly analogous to Humminbird’s MEGA system, providing incredible crisp, clear images at the cost of depth. In CHIRP mode, expect depths of up to 1,000 feet. Normally, that would give us pause: if you’re proud of a product’s performance, you’re going to offer that info! But real-world performance has demonstrated the HDS Live 12’s abilities beyond doubt, and we wouldn’t hesitate to use this fish finder. Some specifications are not available from either Lowrance or Simrad Yachting (the same company since 2006), such as transducer beam angle or target separation. It even squeezes past the awesome Solix 12 in terms of range with its detailed side- and down-imaging - and that’s really saying something! This fish finder makes use of the excellent Simrad Active Imaging 3-in-1 Transom Mount Transducer, providing CHIRP, traditional sonar, and side-imaging. Expect a touch screen augmented by the usual keypad, allowing all-conditions accessibility. Very crisp and clear, it’s easy to read in all conditions. The HDS Live 12 features a very large screen with awesome resolution. A head-to-head competitor with the Solix 12, the Lowrance is packed with truly high-end tech, and on each and every front, meets or rises above the bar set down by Humminbird. The Lowrance HDS Live 12 is market to pros, and has a price tag that reflects that. Their fish finders are no less impressive, rivalling - and perhaps even surpassing - the outstanding Humminbird Helix and Solix series. Lowrance has manufactured marine electronics for generations, and they’re among the most trusted names in saltwater navigation systems. Any of these better than the others, or any of them I should stay away from? Some quick browsing has turned up Humminbird, Lowrance, and Faria as possible replacement brands. If I go this route, any suggestions on what to do with the second empty hole in the dash? Some of the gauges I'm seeing while looking for replacements seem to be all-in-one depth/air temp/surface temp. This particular gauge only shows water temp, but I have seen similar ones that show both air and water. ![]() Is it difficult to replace this style with a new one?įor the surface temp gauge, I have no idea if the gauge itself works since the probe is bad, so again, probably not worth trying to fix. I haven't poked around under the engine yet to see exactly where the old transducer is located, but looking at the bottom of the hull I don't see any holes, so I'm assuming it's glued or mounted inside the hull some other way. I'd love to fix the existing gauges but the few replacement parts I've been able to find are not cheap, and I'm coming up empty-handed on the temp probe, so I'm thinking I would be better off replacing both than trying to spend the equivalent amount fixing these old gauges.įor the depth finder, is it worth trying to find something that will work with the existing transducer? From what I'm finding I believe it's a 192khz transducer. The temp gauge probe wire has broken off right at the probe and looks to be unrepairable. ![]() I think new bezels would fix this, but while the depth finder itself works, the LCD display has one or two elements that don't work. The boat came with a Lowrance 3500 depth finder and a Lowrance LDT-3001 surface temperature gauge.īoth gauges have what looked to be cracked display covers.
